New Area Explored

Today starting out it was a delightful 41 degree, it felt so good not to freeze! Today’s excursion was a 7 1/2 miles.

Since the snow cover had melted tremendously over the past few days decided to go a different way to explore and see what could be found. Went through a very heavily traveled or congregating area for deer and moose. Kind of strange how one gets excited over scat, not the animal itself but scat! Tons of deer, buck, and moose scat to be found and upon the areas with snow that still remained saw coyote tracks as well as, you guessed it, SCAT.

While walking along noticed two bald eagles soaring up above in the distance as well. It was pretty odd today while traveling along that all the birds were very quiet. The Blue Jays usually are squawking all the time, the red squirrels that typically are all too happy to screech alerting that someone is around. Today they just ran along the rock walls with nothing to be said. Stumbled upon a find as well, a beautiful perfect snail shell! Kind of an odd spot to find one, but maybe a bird had brought it there to enjoy the meat inside.

It was really exciting to see that the bears had been out and moving around *smiles*. Stumbled upon some old bear scat, and upon walking along about half a mile more came across some really FRESH scat with bear tracks and upon inspection it appears it may have been tearing a dead tree apart in search of insects?? When on the way back and upon the final stretch of reaching the car stumbled upon some bear scat that was new within the last four days (since the last time in that area). When reaching the car the temperature was a balmy 48 degrees, pretty nice compared to the temperatures of last week.

Thank you for stopping by and as always come on by again to see what is new from the trails. Until the next time stay safe!

Beautiful Winter Morning

It is amazing what a temperature difference of 24 degrees can make for hiking. This morning it was 16 degrees out and it was refreshing. There were lots of coyote, deer, and moose tracks to be seen. The moose prints were really good size so kind of thinking possibly a bull moose. Other than that it was a pretty quiet 7 mile hike. When arriving at the car it was 26 degrees out.
