Along The River

Saturday we decided to head over and walk along the river to soak in the beautiful 45 degree weather. Much to our surprise there was quite a bit of ice and snow still on the river.  Large ice blocks along the way, and glistening ice beads along the rivers edge.

Here are a few photos from that walk.

Stoat In Winter Coat

Today we headed out once again to enjoy the woods.  The temperature was gorgeous with hardly any breeze.  Started with seeing a Red Tailed hawk perched in a tree then off it flew heading east.  Later on we decided it was time to explore some new territory and boy we were not disappointed.

So yesterday was a skate rink along the river and today well let us say only one close incident of losing my balance and falling in the swamp.  We came to a wall at the end of the swamp and heard some wrestling in the leaves and poof a Ermine appeared.

We had thought we had seen one of these about a year ago and it eluded the camera and today was the day for a photo shoot. Did some reading after getting home and learned they are held in great regard for their stealth and fast moves in a symbolic way.  I have to say trying to get a full body shot was hard even with it visiting with us for about 20 minutes or so. Another interesting tidbit was the fur of Ermines used to be used for Royal robes of kings and queens.

It surely appeared that this beauty was entertained by us as well.  I sure hope our paths cross again!  Here are a few photos from today sure hope you enjoy.

Winter Morning Stroll

For the second weekend in a row we have had warmer weather making it more comfortable to get  out and explore some new territory.  After grabbing coffees and started our journey we saw a juvenile Bald Eagle so we knew it was going to be a great morning.  At our first stop had the most GORGEOUS terrain and just had  a feel to it we will defiantely have to go back there.

It is neat this year during our winter strolls the sounds have been of the amazing sounds that the ice makes and how loud.  Thinking of ice we will need to find a good pair of winter boots and water proof, some of the trails were pretty slick and it has been years since we have ice skated!

Here are a few of the captures from this stop.

Not a great photo but good enough for identifying this gorgeous bird of prey, the majestic Bald Eagle.

Another view of the coloration of the feathers, I am not an expert on Eagles and age but looking at the tail feathers the tail is almost white.

Keeper of the forest alerting all we had arrived!

Where this leads who knows, should you stay and be safe or move forward and find out or go back to your comfort zone?  THAT is the question the choice is ALWAYS  upto oneself….

Winter Morning Walk

We started out a bit later than usual and the temp was mild.  As we headed in we saw this beautiful red fox.  It was in the process of following a scent and was really focused, pretty neat to see.  We headed to the first pond along the way and saw a doe, that quickly darted off deeper into the woods.  We could see her walking parallel to us in the distance until we veered off.

When we arrived at the pond it was nice to sit and just feel the breeze and the mist from the snow melting and falling off the branches.  As we were sitting there talking and just listening to the birds and ice sounds of popping, cracking, and dropping in the water. Mother nature decided to use her sense of humor of dumping a good sized pile of snow directly on top of my head!

The ice formations along the waters today were amazing to see.  Along the walk we saw signs of some sort of bird that was snagged for a meal we are thinking it could have been a pheasant as we have seen them in the same area that we were seeing feathers.  Saw some tracks of coyote, deer, and rabbit.  There were plenty of signs that the estrous season has started.

Invited Guests To A Hawks Lunch

It certainly has been a while for a post here as well as it has since being in the woods.  Here in New England the weather has been a bit of a challenge not only for us humans but nature as well.  The past few weeks we have had extremely brutal cold weather with windchill factors of -23 degrees.  Today we finally had somewhat decent weather but limited for time so we grabbed our window of opportunity.

We had the pleasure of a red tail hawk that decided to share its catch and lunch with our presence.  Such a beautiful bird of prey to say the least.  Here are a few photos from our expereince today, hope you enjoy them.
